| BF-sand for extremely light and strong roads. |
The raw material for BF-sand is blast furnace slag. Fast cooling of the melted blast furnace slag in water gives a light, glassy, sand like product called BF-sand. Because of the glassy (amorphous) structure the BF-sand have different properties than those of the air cooled BF-stone.
The most interesting characteristics of BF-sand is that it has so called latent binding properties, which means that after grinding and activation, with for example lime stone, it hardens like ordinary cement.
For impact on the environment see leaching of moraine.
The range of uses for BF-sand includes road material where ground conditions require an extremely light and strong road and as raw material for the cement industry and for Merit.
